Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when affected by injury, illness or disability. (CSP, 2022). Chartered Physiotherapist is a protected title used for human physiotherapists and only those trained to the high standard required can use this title.

Veterinary physiotherapy is not a protected title and therefore does not require training or continual learning and development. The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy (ACPAT) is a special interest group of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) therefore members are human physiotherapist who have completed further studying (2years) to treat all animals. Non human physiotherapists who have been trained to a level comparative to human physiotherapists are eligible for registration with RAMP (Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Professions) who require the gold standard of qualifications and continuing professional development.

If your animal is injured they will need to be assessed by your vet and they must consent and refer for Physiotherapy, find the vet referral form here. If your animal is not injured and you want them assessed for a check up, pre or post competition, for maintenance or for advise then you do not require a vet referral please find the equine self referral form here and the canine self referral form here. For other species please contact me directly here.

Assessment involves observing your animal, asking them to perform certain tasks (walking on lead, sit, down or for the horse lunging and in hand) and then palpate (feel) and move their joints and muscles. Treatments may include movement, exercise, manual therapy (including massage), education and advice, and electrotherapy.

Stance analysis using the Companion stance analyser is a mat that collects data on weight, stability information and individual leg weight-bearing analysis. This is then analysed and can detect early lameness before lameness can be observed and also can be used to track treatment progress.

Here at JW we are passionate about understanding each animal on every level, emotionally, mentally and physically. We strive to help every animal reach their full potential in health, fitness and strength to ensure they are injury free and ensuring all their needs are being met.

With over 20 years experience in human physiotherapy in both the NHS and private practice, Jo decided to spend a couple of years exploring and gaining qualifications in dog training, sports and fitness with a potential career change in mind. However she realised that she didn't want to move away from physiotherapy but wanted to combine her passion for animals with her skills and knowledge as a physiotherapist.

Jo has a BSc (Hons) Sports Biomechanics, MSc (pre-reg) Physiotherapy and a PGDip Veterinary Physiotherapy.
Jo also has a diploma in both sports massage and reflexology.
As part of her human physiotherapy practice she is trained in acupuncture and soft tissue and joint injection.

Jo is a current member of the chartered society of physiotherapy (CSP) and the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy (ACPAT) As a category A member. She is also registered with RAMP (Register for animal musculoskeletal practitioners) and is fully insured.

Jo has been a keen horse rider from childhood, trained her dogs in agility, hoopers, obedience and is currently working towards her APDT awards, UK kennel club Good citizen scheme with her dogs and hoping to work towards gundog grades with one of her dogs. She is supporting one of her children in the young kennel club scheme.

Jo owns a Portuguese water dog, and 2 young standard parti-coloured poodles. Her love of horse riding has continued with her children taking up riding from a young age and they are hoping to handle the dogs in a hoopers competition very soon.

At JW physiotherapy we have a range of electrotherapy equipment to aid recovery and pain relief including a K Laser. Laser is used when appropriate as part of physiotherapy treatment but you can be referred by your vet for stand alone K Laser treatment.

From October 2023 we will be holding regular K Laser clinics in local veterinary practices and at different venues around Bury, Greater Manchester, please contact for an up to date list and to book onto these clinics.

Laser stimulates the healing mechanisms via a process called photobiomodulation and is able to improve healing times, reduce pain, increase circulation, and decrease swelling. Laser has been used with both animals and humans for decades.

Laser can help treat:
Joint pain, including neck and back pain and pain pain due to osteoarthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia
Soft tissue problems such as tendinopathy, sprains
Oedma
chronic pain
Fractures and sprains
Dermatitis
post surgical wounds
burns, infection and chronic wounds

Canine Hoopers UK

advanced instruction

Canine Hoopers is a new and upcomming sport which is more accessible to all breeds and ages. There are no jumps, sharp turns or narrow tunnels in this sport and therefore does not increase the forces the dog (or any animal) experiences as with the jumps and tight turns in agility.

The Canine Conditioning Academy

The Canine conditioning academy. Strength from the inside out.

IMDT

Currently we are working towards IMDT (institute of modern dog trainers) dog training qualification. We do not plan at this time to offer any standard dog training classes but are completing this qualification to enhance our handling and training skills and helping us help and understand our clients.
